Causes Of Chlamydia
The bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis cause this infection. Unlike most of the sexually transmitted diseases, it can even spread due to the contact of genitals. Even if you are using condoms, there is skin to skin contact through which you may develop chlamydia.
This bacterium is present on the surface of the affected area so even a touch can lead to its transfer. Unprotected sex is the major cause of the spread of this disease.
Before you indulge in unprotected sex, always ensure that your partner is not suffering from chlamydia or any STIs.
A woman with chlamydia may pass on this disease to her newborn baby. Though there is a prenatal test for chlamydia. But it is better to double check with your gynecologist during the first prenatal checkup.
A very rare case is also observed when your eyes can also get infected. The infection spreads in your eyes through contact with genitals or the affected area.
This occurs very rarely but it can lead to complications in your eyes. I have discussed that in the next section of this article.
Symptoms Of Chlamydia
As I have mentioned above, there are less noticeable signs of chlamydia. Usually, men and women are not sure whether they have this infection. It is due to the absence of visible symptoms.
However, there are very mild symptoms that you must know. Lack of awareness is often a culprit to make the condition severe.
So below are those few symptoms you must pay attention to:
1. Women
The chlamydia infection in the cervix of women shows no symptoms. The infection in women can occur due to vaginal, anal, or oral sex. There is a risk of complications like Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).
It is a generic term for the infection in the reproductive tract. It usually affects the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. PID can lead to scarring inside the reproductive organs. It can further cause serious complications such as chronic pelvic pain, difficulty in conceiving, or ectopic pregnancy.
Chlamydia can be considered as a silent epidemic as it may not cause any visible signs or symptoms. About 80-90% are such cases where women do not develop any symptoms. As there are no symptoms, the infection takes months or years to discover.
For sexually active women who are not pregnant, I would recommend screening. Especially, those who are under 25 years of age. They are at a high risk of infection.
Women taking contraceptive pills have also shown the presence of these bacteria. Studies revealed that 9% of women taking contraceptive pills have chlamydia.
Symptoms Of Chlamydia In Women Include:
- Pain And Burning Sensation During Urination
- Lower Abdominal Pain
- Vaginal Discharge
- Pain During Sexual Intercourse
- Bleeding After Sex
- Inflammation In The Eye Even If It Is Not Affected
- Rectal Pain, Bleeding Or Discharge
- A Persistent Sore Throat
- Lower Back Pain
- Acute Fever
- Nausea
- Bleeding Between Periods
2. Men
In men, the inflammation of urethra is the most common symptom. In about 50% of cases, the infection is seen in the urethra. Untreated chlamydia in men may spread to the testicles. It may result in epididymitis that can cause sterility in rare cases.
Chlamydia can also cause prostatic inflammation in men. However, the exact relevance in prostatitis is not ascertained. It is due to the contamination from urethritis.

- Cloudy, Milky, Yellowish Thick Discharge From The Penis

3. Eye
Chlamydia can also infect your eyes. Chlamydia conjunctivitis can be a cause of blindness. The infection may spread from fingers to the eye, shared towels or clothes.
It can also spread due to coughing or sneezing of the infected person. It can also spread due to eye-seeking flies. Less is known about the eye infection.
People usually relate chlamydia only to reproductive organs. But it can cause infection in the eye that can be very dangerous.
Newborn babies can also develop eye infection during the time of birth. But cases of eye conjunctivitis have now reduced. The world health organization is aiming to eliminate eye trachoma by 2020.
4. Joints
Many people are not aware of the severity of this condition. Chlamydia trachomatis may also infect your joints. It can cause reactive arthritis. It infects especially the young men. In the U.S many such cases have been reported.
About 15,000 men develop reactive arthritis each year. It is due to chlamydia. The probability is quite high. It can affect both the sexes. It is more common in men.
5. Infants
The newborns usually develop chlamydia from the infected mother. However, there are many other causes of chlamydia in infants.
These include:
- Spontaneous abortion
- Premature birth
- Conjunctivitis
6. Other Conditions
Chlamydia can also cause lymphogranuloma venereum. It is an infection of the lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels. It is usually associated with genital ulceration and swelling of lymph nodes. It may also present with rectal inflammation or fever.
Risk Factors
The sexually active persons are at a high risk to develop chlamydia. The cause is sexual contact and in old aged people, it is weak immunity.
The most common risk factors include:
- Improper use of condoms
- History of sexually transmitted diseases increases the risk of chlamydia
- People below the age of 24 years are at high risk to develop chlamydia
- Having multiple sex partners in the past or at present
- Experiencing sexual intercourse for the first time can also lead to infections like chlamydia. This is because you are not aware of how easily it spreads.
Complications
Chlamydia causes a risk for other STIs such as HIV.

1. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
PID is an infection of the uterus, ovaries and the fallopian tubes. It can be cured with antibiotics.

It is the inflammation of the fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes get blocked. It prevents the entry of egg from the ovary to the womb. It can be treated with surgery.
4. Bartholinitis
It is the swelling of the Bartholin’s glands. Chlamydia can block the glands that produce mucus. It leads to the formation of a cyst. The cyst becomes infected and may develop into the abscess.
In Men
1. Epididymitis
It is the inflammation of the epididymis that carries the sperm to testicles.
2. Urethritis
It is the inflammation of the uterine tube.
3. Reactive Arthritis
It is the inflammation of the joints and eye conjunctivitis. Painkillers can treat these conditions.
Chlamydia Test (How To Diagnose)
Diagnosis of chlamydia depends on a laboratory test. Basically, it indicates whether the causative organism is present or not. It is done either through culture or identification of the genetic material of the bacteria. Culture is an old procedure that takes too much of time. It is used very rarely now.
Rapid tests are always in demand for the routine diagnostic purposes. They identify the genetic material of the bacteria. They are known as nucleic acid amplification tests or NAATs.
Doctors take the specimen for NAATs at the time of gynecological examination. This is done by swabbing the cervix. But diagnostic tests can also be done on urine samples or self-collected vaginal swabs.
Prevention From Chlamydia
1. Change In Your Diet
It is true that many people often neglect this fact. Changing your diet can be helpful in treating chlamydia. Your diet is not directly connected to treating chlamydia. But a regular food or drink can prevent the condition from getting worst.
Keeping a check on what you are eating can prevent the bacteria from spreading and getting worse. It is more a prevention than a cure.
When you are eating a nutritional diet, your immune system strengthens. A balanced diet rich in nutrients stimulates the production of white blood cells. A healthy diet speeds up the recovery process. It helps you get rid of chlamydia faster.
Here are the food items you must include in your diet:
- Green leafy vegetables such as kale, alfalfa, wheat grass, barley grass, or chlorella
- Probiotics such as curd and yogurt

B. Remain Monogamous
That means to avoid having sexual intercourse with multiple partners. Also, make sure that your partner is monogamous too.

It is better to go for a test regularly if you are sexually active. Likewise, go for a test after unprotected sex or sexual intercourse with a new partner.
D. Asexual Abstinence
Abstain from any sexual activity during the treatment of the infection. This will prevent the spread of infection to other areas.
