Traditional Ayurvedic Vata Dosha Daily Routine
Following is a brief description of Vata pacifying Daily Routine. It’s an ideal plan but don’t start doing everything together at once from the next day.
Instead carry out 2-3 practices in a week, next week add a few more and keep adding till you have all of them.
Pay close attention to the minute details and practices to get the maximum benefits.
1. Wake Up Between 3 am to 6 am
This is the classic rising time. It is the Vata time of the day. During this time, there is lightness and clarity which will help you to get up more easily.
Additionally, this time will let you connect with nature and your inner consciousness. If you are an adult, you don’t have any serious illness, and you want to balance out your Vata you can carry this out.
However, if you are sick, elderly, pregnant, or breastfeeding you can get up a bit late if getting up at this time is too much for you.
Additionally, regardless of what time you are getting up, your routine would work best if you get up at a consistent time every day.
2. Eliminate The Waste
Passing your bowel early morning is necessary. Emptying the bladder and the bowel is healthy as it leads to the complete removal of waste from the body.
Alternatively, you can also regulate them by consuming Triphala powder. Take a teaspoon of Triphala powder mix it in a glass of water and drink it before going to bed. This will help you to get a healthy and regular elimination habit.
3. Scraping Your Tongue
This simple hygienic practice is great to remove all the build up toxins from your mouth. Overnight toxins get accumulated in your tongue. Scraping it off will cleanse the vital organs and aid in digestion too.
Ayurveda considers scraping tongue as an important aspect of oral hygiene as it is the most natural detoxifying way.
Additionally, scrapping your tongue will let you notice the coating on it each morning and will tell you how your dietary choices are.
It’s obvious and self-realizing act. If you feel too much of accumulation is there, you will consider changing your diet.
Lastly, you don’t need to buy any fancy plastic tongue cleaners, opt for a simple stainless steel cleaner. The steel ones are good for all the doshas. Once you finish scraping, rinse your mouth with clean cold water three times.
4. Brush Your Teeth
Brushing is extremely important; we know you must be doing it daily. Ayurveda recommends brushing with a paste which has a bitter, astringent, and pungent taste.
Neem paste is the best as it has all the above-mentioned tastes. It is easily available in the market. Alternatively, if you can’t find the neem paste go for the toothpaste which has a green label on it.
This label signifies that it is made from natural herbal products. Never go for the black and red label toothpaste as they have chemicals which are not good for your health.
5. Drink A Glass Of Warm Water
Try drinking a glass of warm water to wash the gastrointestinal tract, hydrates the tissues, and to soften your bowel movement.
This will further help you regulate your stools and pass them in the morning itself. It is a good practice especially for people who suffer from constipation.
It is best to drink water after cleaning your mouth and tongue as it won’t let you swallow any bacteria or toxin build up overnight in your mouth or tongue.
6. Pulling Oil
You might not be aware of this practice but holds a lot of significance in Ayurveda. It is said that swishing and gargling help to strengthen the gums, jaw, teeth, improves the taste, and voice.
Swishing and gargling with warm oil are preferred. You have to do this for a minimum of two minutes to a maximum of 15 minutes.
You can do it for 15 minutes if you find this practice appealing.
Use any natural oil like coconut oil, olive oil, or sesame oil.
7. Massage Your Gums With Pulling Oil
Massage your gums with a clean index finger with oil. Use your finger and massage it for good five minutes. This will increase the blood circulation in these tissues and encourage the absorption of the oil.
8. Cleansing Eyes
The eyes are a very important part of your body. During the day, they tend to accumulate a lot of heat.
Splashing a lot of water into your eye cleans it, cools it, soothes it, relaxes the eye, and keep you awaken the entire day.
9. Meditation And Exercise
This is a crucial thing you should focus on. It works to calm your nervous system and the best time to practice it in the morning.
Meditation, pranayama, prayer, etc. are all ways to ground before beginning the day. If you feel it’s difficult to start with this then, simply sit quietly and breath slowly and deeply.
Do it for good 10 minutes regularly to see the magic. Additionally, you can also carry out a few breathing exercises along with it.
Once you finish meditating, prefer exercising for at least 30 minutes.
Moving your body in the morning is both grounding and energizing. It brings about the natural detoxification by promoting circulation and moving every inch of the tissues and organs.
Early morning is the best time to strengthen and stabilize the Kapha. You can do it anytime from 6 am to 10 am.
If you are unable to do it, prefer doing it in early evening between 6 pm to 10 pm before your dinner. You can do any form of exercise given below:
i) Yoga
Yoga is a natural part of an Ayurvedic daily routine. There are many forms of yoga depending on their constitution and your current body consumption. For Vata predominant types, slow yoga forms and stretching are recommended.
ii) Other Forms Of Exercise
Ayurveda recommends mild to moderate type of exercises. Don’t go for exercises that are too strenuous for your body.
You should do exercises only about 50% of your body capacity until you break a mild sweat from forehead, underarms, and spine.
For a Vata pacifying daily routine, go for slow and gentle exercises like walking slow suryanamaskar, chi gong, tai chi, etc.
10. Massage Oil
Self-massaging will calm your nervous system, lubricates the tissues, rejuvenate the tissues, and improve the blood circulation of the body.
This is an act of self-love. In Ayurveda, it is called Abhyanga practice of love, self-care, and act of health benefits.
Each morning before a shower or bath massage take about 1/4 cup of Vata massage oil or organic sesame oil into the skin.
Massage it for good 10 minutes all over your body. If possible go to a massage therapist for a full body massage once a month.
11. Put Warm Oil To Ears
Ears are closely related to the Vata Dosha. Lubricating both your ears with warm sesame oil is good for pacifying your Vata.
It will help you lubricate your local tissues in an around the neck, enhance your sense of hearing, and encourage healthy TMJ function.
Place around 10 drops of sesame oil in one ear at a time. Let it sit for good 5 minutes and then repeat the same for the other ear.
If you find this to difficult simply dip your pinkie finger in the oil and then lubricate your inner ear with the same.
12. Massage Your Head And Foot With Warm Oil
Oiling your foot, head and scalp is soothing and refreshing. A slow, gentle head massage will prevent a headache, hair loss, thinning of hair, and hair greying. Not only this, but it will also sharpen your sense organs and prepare you for the day.
Same way, massaging your foot is equally important. Focus on the sole and massage your entire foot. Various pressure points on the feet correlate with the other organs and tissues from your body so; this will also support the functioning of the other organs of the body.
13. Cleanse Your Smell Sense
In Ayurveda, there are two basic ways to clean your nasal passages. You have to carry out both these practices early in the morning and empty stomach. You can carry them on alternate days, don’t follow them immediately one after the other.
The practice will help you clean the nasal tissue and sinus from dirt, toxins, and the excess mucus. Both of them are explained below in detail:
i) Nasal Rinse: In this, you pour warm salt water in your nasal passage. This moistens the nasal membrane, cleans te passage of dirt, dust, and pollen, and the extra mucus.
A few people find their nose dry after doing this if you feel the same lubricate your nasal passage with your pinkie finger with coconut oil.
ii) Nasaya: It is an ayurvedic practice done using medicated oil. This practice is best if you face nasal congestion, nasal allergy, sinus, or other breathing issues.
The practice works by soothing the delicate tissues, improving the breathing pattern, relieving stress, and giving you mental clarity. Anybody can do this, but if you are pregnant or menstruating don’t do this.
For this, lie down on your back and bring your head off the edge of the bed. Your position should be as such that the crown of your head should be parallel with the floor.
After attaining this position, pour 3-5 drops of nasya oil into each of the nostrils. Sniff the oil and massage your entire face and head to help the oil move to your sinuses and head. Be in this position for 2-3 minutes and then come back to normal.
13. Bathing
This is an important part of the Vata Ayurvedic daily routine. It cleanses and purifies your entire body. It gives you a sense of freshness, energy boost, and kick off to start your day.
While bathing use a mild soap. Don’t use any harsh soap as it rinses all the oil from your body that you used during the message. If possible rinse your body only with warm water as it is enough to remove the excess oil.
14. Vata Breakfast
The Vata breakfast should appropriate and should be under the Vata pacifying diet principles. This is the first meal of the day, so it should be fulfilling to keep your energy levels maintained.
Your breakfast content should synchronize with the weather and your body constitution. Lastly, try to have your breakfast at the same time of the day regularly.
15. Vata Lunch
Your digestive tract is strongest during this time of the day. The Agni in your body is strongest between 10 am to 2 pm, i.e., whatever you eat during this time get digested easily.
Your lunch should be the heaviest meal of the day. Try having it before 2 pm. You should include all the food groups in your lunch to keep your body grounded and nourished.
16. Work Time
Try to keep your work time constant throughout. We know it’s not possible all the time but do the extent it is possible for you. This calms down your nervous system and helps your body clock to understand the timings.
Moreover, don’t overextend yourself regularly. We should work till the time our body permits and our health supports it to prevent stress and exhaustion.
If we tend to deplete ourselves emotionally, physically, and mentally the Vata dosha imbalances at a drastic rate. So, how much ever possible don’t make overextending a habit.
17. Rest In Evening
Once you finish your work. Change your clothing sit and relax. Spend time with your family and friends and do whatever you love to do without exerting yourself.
18. Dinner Time
This is the last meal of your day, and this shouldn’t be heavy at all. Stick to consistent dinner time. Nevertheless, always finish your dinner at least 3 hours before your sleeping time.
Your dinner meal should be smaller than your lunch. It should be light in weight, less oily, and less spicy. This leads to easy digestion, prevent accumulation of toxins, and give you quality sleep.
After finishing your dinner, you should eat or drink Triphala. Have Triphala one hour before going to bed. This ayurvedic medicine is good to balance all the three doshas of the body.
Additionally, it works to clean your body system, detoxify your body, nourish it, and rejuvenate the body tissues.
Mix 1/2 teaspoon of Triphala powder along in a glass of warm water. Alternatively, you can also opt for Triphala capsules. Take one capsule daily before bed.
19. Bedtime
Your bedtime should be consistent. Having a constant time lets your body naturally prepare for the daily routine.
This practice is beautiful and lets you have the beautiful quality sleep. It also prevents laziness from getting up the next day.
Before going to your bed brush your teeth, wash your face, apply oil to your feet, and carry any other soothing activity like meditation, music or whatever you wish too.
If you love to read in your bed, the Ayurveda principles disregard it. It is because there is an association between bed and sleeping, if you read at that time, you will end up disrupting your sleep.
However, if you wish too, designate a special place like a rocking chair or a couch to read. Make sure your reading time should not be longer than 20 minutes as it will stimulate your mind and eyes, and this will disrupt healthy sleeping.
