What Causes Headache?

Generally, headaches are classified into three types-

Headaches are characterised by tenseness experienced in the shoulder, scalp and neck. The most common causes of a headache are:

  • Stress

  • Abnormal neurone activity
  • Lack of sleep or excess of sleep

  • Excessive intake of alcohol

Home Remedies For Quick Relief From Headache

A person suffering from a headache can feel a turmoil going on in his mind. It is very painful to live with headaches. The first thing that comes to mind when it comes to treating headaches is a painkiller! But, many of us are unaware of the side effects painkillers have on our body. Therefore, here are some simple home remedies to get rid of this devil!

1. Water

It is found that dehydration is one of the major reasons for headaches. All you need to do is drink plenty of water and see how quickly you get rid of the pain. Stay away from alcohol as it dehydrates your body!

2. Hot water

If you are stressed and it is the reason for your headache, then all you do is put a hot pack on the back of the neck and see the magic! The heat relaxes the tensed muscles and gives you relief.

How to use:

Place a hot water bag on the back off the neck. You may also take a hot shower directly on the back of your neck. This gives immense relief.

Immerse your hands in bearable hot water for 10-15 minutes to improve blood circulation and get relaxed.

3. Ice pack

If you have the sinus problem, then headache is a regular member in your life! An ice pack can help you get rid of headaches that are mainly caused due to sinus and stress.

How to use:

Place an ice pack on the back of neck to numb the pain. This will lead to shrinking of blood vessels that will help in improved blood circulation.

Place some crushed ice cubes in a clean cloth and place it on the forehead to get relief from pain.

Note: Never place ice directly on the skin. it damages the skin.

4. Peppermint

Though peppermint is considered to have the strong aroma, still it has soothing properties. It gives calming effect.

How to use:

Add 1 tsp of dry peppermint to boiling water and let it steep. Now, strain it and add some honey to it for taste. Drink the tea slowly and see how calm you become after it!

You can also get a massage using peppermint oil on your neck, temples and jaw.

5. Lemon

Headaches are also caused due to acidity. Lemon is considered the best remedy for getting rid of such headaches. It gives you a refreshed feeling and makes you feel energetic.

How to use:

Squeeze half lemon in warm water and drink it. This is very effective in reducing the intensity of a headache.

6. Apple

As it is said, ‘An apple a day keeps a doctor away!’ apple is very helpful in reducing headaches. It helps in maintaining the acid-alkaline balance in the body. Also, smelling of green apple reduces the migraine headache to the great extent.

How to use:

Every morning, eat an apple that has salt sprinkled over it. After eating the fruit, drink some warm water.

7. Eucalyptus oil

We all know that eucalyptus oil is very useful in treating headaches caused due to cold and cough. As it possesses pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, it helps in reducing headaches to a great extent. It relaxes the tensed muscles which lead to the headache.

How to use:

Eucalyptus oil, along with almond oil or coconut oil, should be used to massage on forehead and temples to get a relaxed feeling.

8. Ginger

Though it has a strong aroma, it is an all-rounder. It has anti-inflammatory properties, relaxes blood vessels and reduces swelling in the head. It also reduces the pain.

How to use:

Make a paste of ginger with water and apply it on the forehead to get quick relief from a headache.

9. Cinnamon

It is also a wonderful spice that has excellent medicinal properties. It is one of the best home remedies for various ailments.

How to use:

Make cinnamon powder and add water to it to make a thick paste. Now, apply this paste on your temples for 30 minutes and wash it with lukewarm water.

10. Quick movements of head and neck

I know exercise can be the last thing you think of when you are having a headache which is killing you, but by exercise I mean simple quick movements mentioned below!

How to do:

  • Stretching your head and neck help to lessen the intensity of the headache.
  • Relax your muscles by slowing rotating neck in clockwise and anti-clockwise direction.
  • Bend your neck towards the shoulders which also relaxes the muscles.

11. Clove

Known for its pain-relieving properties, clove gives a soothing effect and reduces a headache. We can also make use of clove oil, but we need to use it with a base oil.

How to use:

Crush few clove and wrap it in a handkerchief. Whenever you feel like you are having a headache, smell the handkerchief and see the relief you get!

You can also use clove oil in addition with coconut oil and a little sea salt to massage your temples in cases of a headache.

12. Basil

A naturally-scented herb, Basil has analgesic properties. It is also known to relax muscles and reduce headaches that are caused due to stress.

How to use:

Add some fresh Basil leaves to water and let it boil for 2-3 minutes. Add honey to it and sip this tea!

13. Mint juice

Even the name of mint itself is so refreshing! Menthol and menthone are main components of mint and they are very useful in reducing headaches.

How to use:

Take fresh mint leaves and extract its juice. Now, apply this on the temples and forehead and see how a headache disappears in minutes!

As a headache is a common problem, it is essential that every one of us should know these quick remedies because having painkillers every time is not a good option!
