What Is Stomach Upset?

Dyspepsia, also known as indigestion or upset stomach, is a term which describes discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen. It is not the disease. A dyspepsia is a group of symptoms which often include bloating, nausea.

Indigestion is the problem which is caused by stomach acid coming into contact with the mucosa of the digestive system, a sensitive protective lining of a digestive system. Stomach acid breaks down the mucosa, causing irritation and which triggers the symptoms of indigestion.

1. Brat Diet

It is balanced food diet. BRAT stands for Bananas, Rice or rice water, Applesauce, and Toast. It is recommended for adults and children. The BRAT diet helps us to recover from upset stomach because it includes binding foods.

2. Papaya

PAPAYA contains enzymes which are similar to digestive enzymes, which helps break up foods which are irritating the stomach.

How To Use?

Eat fresh papaya before the meals for 2 to 3 times in a day will assist in the easy digestion of foods and also avoid any undigested form retain in the stomach for long, reliving the symptoms of stomach problems.

Alternatively, the papaya enzyme capsules which are also available commercially, but prefer only using the fresh and natural form.

3. Apples

These are not only high in insoluble fiber, but they are also rich in pectin and other enzymes which are helpful to break down the irritating food particles. If you have the sensitive stomach, once try it. Use them baked, not raw.

Thanks to the pectin it contains, apples used to increase enzyme activity in rats, which may help them to digest food better and calm the upset stomach.

Apples have to be consumed for long-term to see the effects, so just eating one now and again won’t helps. If you drink juice regularly, try it for pressed apple juice, as well as adding fresh apples to your diet. Eating an apple a day can save you from five types of cancer. So, eat it daily.

4. Ginger

Ginger or ginger juice is a popular and highly effective ingredient to treat the upset stomach. It has antibacterial property and antifungal property that helps to relieve stomach pain and relieves indigestion problem, as well as it reduces the frequency of the loose stools.  Chemicals that present in this will help relax the intestinal tract.

  • Add one-half teaspoon of dry powder of ginger to a cup of buttermilk, mix it well and drink this solution three to four times a day for two days. You can also add the pinch of asafetida.
  • Simmer a few slices of the fresh ginger in the two cups of the boiling water for 10 minutes. Leave it to cool and then drink that tea several times a day

Note: Ginger remedies are not suitable for those people who are suffering from high blood pressure.

5. Bananas

Bananas are considered as super food for treatment of gastrointestinal problems like indigestion. The fruit is easily digestible and it helps to absorb excess acid in the stomach.

It is rich in pectin. Also, potassium content which is high in bananas is very high.

Rub a ripe banana and mix it in a glass of buttermilk. Drink this solution two or three times daily for one to two days.

6. Baking Soda

Baking soda is also called as sodium bicarbonate. It is a common home remedy for indigestion. One study found that it may help eliminate gas and rebalance pH.

Also, the risks of consuming too much of baking soda may outweigh any benefits.

Baking Soda With Warm Water

  • First Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to one cup of warm  water
  • Stir a few drops of lemon juice
  • Mix it well and drink it to get relief from upset stomach. you see the result within 10–15 minutes

This method helps to soothe the stomach. Repeat it once in 3 hours, if upset stomach persists

7. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar was the best remedy for upset stomach used in many homes. A theory says that when your stomach doesn’t have sufficient acid , it  makes  the use of whatever acid is there.

This sometimes puts the pressure and it results in existing acid flows back. It causes pain and discomfort. Lack of acid in the stomach also leads to improper digestion of the protein which further leads to a creation of toxins in the intestines.

Here apple cider vinegar comes into the picture and relieves you the discomfort you are facing.

Get This

  • Apple cider vinegar- one tablespoon(tbsp)
  • Water- 1 glass

Do This

  • Whenever you feel problem in your stomach after having meals, add one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water.
  • Mix it well and drink it.
  • Stomach upset is getting free within minutes of having apple cider vinegar.
  • Try to get the apple cider vinegar which is stored in the glass bottle rather than in a plastic bottle.

This remedy, however, may not work if your stomach upset is due to stomach ulcers.

8. Hot Pack For Stomach Upset

This remedy is particularly useful when you experience pain due to your upset stomach. Heat loosen up and relaxes the muscles and thus helps to get rid of all the discomforts related to stomach upset. Heat also increases the blood movement to your skin surface.

Get This

  • Hot pack

Do This

  • First, check the temperature of the hot pack. It should not be too hot. You need to have it enough warm so that can be tolerated by your belly skin.
  • You want to Lie down and place the hot pack over the stomach.
  • Let it be there for as much time as comfortable for you.
  • If the pack become cold before you find comfort, reheat it and again place on your stomach.
  • We want to advise that not to give your stomach heat treatment for more than 15-20 minutes. it will cause the problem.

9. Mint

Mint which is in the form of peppermint (or) spearmint can soothe a troubled tummy. Mint helps the food to move through the intestines properly and relieve stomach cramps.

Take a cup of mint tea to let the herb works its magic: Put 1 teaspoon dried mint in the cup and boiling water is added to it. Cover the cup and let it stand for 10 minutes. Strain and drink up three cups of the warm tea a day. Be sure to drink it on the empty stomach.

10. White Rice

White rice may not seem to be appetising, but it is a part of the foods for stomach upset. Rice can help to absorb fluid, which may be lost when we are suffering from diarrhoea. It can also make your stomach feel better because the starch present coats your stomach.

How To Prevent Upset Stomach?

1. Diet And Lifestyle Change

If the symptoms are mild and your indigestion is not occurring, some lifestyle changes will ease symptoms. This usually involves consuming less fatty foods, alcohol, try to sleep at least 7 hours every night, and avoiding spicy foods.

2. Cut Back On Grease And Fats

This is for most of the people with digestive problems. Try to replace greasy foods with lean meats and grains. Adding a small amount of the fibre to your diet is helpful as well, but it should be added gradually.

3. Yoga And Meditation
